Who Needs a Canadian Visa?


Visas are required for visitors from countries with no visa exemption or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) agreement with Canada. People from 148 countries, in particular, require a visa to visit, work, or immigrate to Canada.

You must apply for a visa to enter Canada if you are one of these applicants. You will have a different way of applying depending on the visa you desire, but you must follow a few general stages.

Temporary Visas to Canada

Temporary Canada visas allow visitors to stay in the country for a set length of time defined by the Canadian Consulate or Border Services Officers (BSO). This period can last up to 6 months to 12 months. The temporary visa, on the other hand, can be a single or multiple entries.

A single entry visa allows a person to visit Canada only once, remain for six months, and return home. A multiple entry visa permits a person to enter Canada several times before their visa expires and stay in the country for a certain period.

The following are the many types of temporary visas for Canada:

Canada Tourist Visa.  Canada Tourist Visa allows the holder to enter Canada only for tourism.

Canada Super Visa. The Canadian Super Visa enables grandparents of Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents to visit their children or grandchildren for an extended period.

Diplomatic and Official Visa. The Diplomatic and Official visa allows foreign officials and diplomats to enter Canada for government business and reasons.

Courtesy Visa. Courtesy visas are granted to individuals who do not meet the Diplomatic or Official visa requirements but are deemed necessary due to their ranks and positions. Members of trade missions or diplomats with a tourist plan, for example, fall into this category.

Canada Business Visa. The Canada Business Visa is issued to individuals or groups of business people traveling to Canada for business purposes.

Visa to Give Birth in Canada. This visa is granted to individuals who meet all of the criteria for a short term stay in Canada, are pregnant, and plan to give birth in Canada. When a child is born in Canada, he or she automatically becomes a citizen of Canada.

Intending Organ Donors Visa. This visa is granted to a person visiting Canada to donate an organ to a Citizen of that country.

Canada Facilitation Visa. Facilitation Visas are granted to Canadian citizens with dual nationality and do not have a Canadian passport but have a passport from another country. 

Canada Student Visa. A Canadian student visa is granted to those who a Canadian university has accepted to pursue their studies. If you are going to Canada to study for less than six months, you can only get a TRV visa; however, you will need a Student Visa if you will study for more than six months.

Canada Temporary Work Visa. Temporary work visas in Canada are granted to individuals who have a job offer in Canada and intend to work for up to six months. To obtain this visa, the applicant must have a valid job offer letter from an employer and be eligible for a temporary visa.

Temporary Residence Permit. This permit is for people who have to travel to Canada for various reasons but are not eligible for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). This permit is only valid for the duration of the person’s stay in Canada, for example, two weeks for a workshop.

Working Holiday Visa. The Canada Working Holiday Visa is granted to youngsters from 30 countries to work and travel in Canada. It is a random selection visa, which means that applicants will submit their applications and have to wait to randomly select to apply for the work permit.

Permanent Canada Visas

Permanent Canada visas allow the holder to remain in the country indefinitely. These are also known as immigrant visas and come in a variety of forms, including the following:

Startup Visa Program. The Canada Startup Visa is meant for individuals who will be personally involved in contributing to the economy. They must have a net worth of at least CAD$300,000 and commit to owning and managing at least one-third of a Canadian business and creating and maintaining employment within three years of arriving in Canada.

Self-employed Persons Visa. The Self-employed person visa is for individuals who can start their businesses and have skills in business, athletics, culture, or farming. In addition, these individuals must demonstrate how they intend to finance the business and their expertise in those areas.

Quebec-Selected Skilled Worker Program (QSWP). If you have one of the required occupations in the Canadian province of Quebec and are fluent in French, you can apply for the Quebec Skilled Worker Program, which will allow you to work permanently there.

Family-Sponsorship Program. This Visa allows Canadian citizens spouses and dependent children to immigrate to Canada permanently.

Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP). This visa is granted to caregivers eligible to care for the elderly, disabled, or children in a private home in Canada.
